Choosing the Right Size for Air Travel
It is important to choose the right size of container for your pet. Airlines check that your pet has enough room to turn around normally while standing, to stand and sit upright, and to lie down in a natural position.
Note: IATA does not certify, approve, endorse or sell any particular pet container manufacturer, brand, make or model. Always check your airline's container requirements before you book.
Before You Book
- Is your pet travelling within Ireland or internationally?
- When do you want your pet to travel?
- What is your pet's size and weight?
- How many animals will be travelling?
- Will your pet be accompanied?
- Will the journey include a stopover?
- What is your pet's final destination?
- Do you have a suitable container for your pet?
The EU treats commercial and non commercial pet movements differently, and has separate rules for travel within the EU and from outside the EU. Check the current EU pet travel rules, including the EU pet passport, before you travel.
Preparing for the Journey
-
Get your pet used to the crate: let them become familiar with it a few weeks or months before you travel. Animals travel much better in a crate they know.
-
Health certificate: most airlines require one for any animal they carry, in the cabin or as an unaccompanied shipment.
-
Cabin or hold: only small dogs and cats can travel in the cabin, and some airlines don't allow it at all. In the hold, pets travel in a heated and ventilated area, which is often quieter and darker.
-
Talk to the airline early: confirm they will take your pet on your chosen day and flight, as some limit the number of animals per flight. Reconfirm at least 48 hours before departure.
-
Check in timing: if your pet travels in the cabin, check in as late as possible. If in the hold, check in early so your pet can settle somewhere quiet.
-
Food and water: reduce food the day before but give enough water. Walk your dog before leaving for the airport and again before check in. A light meal 2 hours before handing your pet over can help calm them.
-
Air freight: make sure the air freight facility is open at the other end so your pet can be collected. Weekday flights are best.
-
Snub nosed breeds: transporting dogs such as Boxers, Pugs, Bulldogs and Pekingese in hot weather is not recommended, as they struggle to keep a normal body temperature.
