Choosing the Right Crate Size
It is important to buy the right sized container for your pet. Airlines require that your pet has enough space to turn around normally while standing, to stand and sit upright, and to lie down in a natural position. Measure your pet before you buy and check the requirements with your airline.
Please note: IATA does not certify, approve, endorse or sell any pet container manufacturer, brand or model, and does not endorse any pet transport or relocation service. Be wary of offers that claim otherwise.
Questions to Answer Before Booking
- Is your pet travelling within your own country, or internationally?
- When do you want your pet to travel?
- What is your pet's size and weight?
- How many animals will be travelling?
- Will your pet be accompanied?
- Do you intend to break the journey or stop over along the way?
- What is your pet's final destination?
- Do you have a suitable container for your pet?
EU Regulations for Pet Travel
The EU treats commercial and non commercial pet movements differently, and movements within the EU differently from those coming from third countries. For more information on non commercial pet travel see:
Preparing for Air Travel with Your Pet
- Get your pet used to the crate for a few weeks or months before travel. Animals travel well when they are familiar with their crate.
- If you plan to build your own wooden crate, check first that the airline accepts it. Make sure all locks work properly and your pet cannot bend, chew or push through the door mesh.
- Most airlines require a health certificate for any animal they carry.
- Only small dogs and cats can travel in the cabin. Other pets travel in a heated and ventilated hold.
- Contact your airline early to confirm your pet can travel on your chosen flight, as many limit the number of animals per flight. Reconfirm at least 48 hours before departure.
- Keep time at the airport to a minimum. For cabin travel check in as late as possible; for the hold, check in early so your pet can settle somewhere quiet.
- Reduce food the day before but give enough water, and walk your dog before leaving and again before check in. A light meal 2 hours before handing over your pet will help to calm it, and is a legal requirement in the United States.
- If shipping as air freight, check that the freight facility will be open so your pet can be collected.
- Weekday flights are best, as all staff are working and handovers are easier.
- Snub nosed breeds such as Boxers, Pugs, Bulldogs and Pekingese should not fly in hot weather, as they find it hard to keep a normal body temperature.
